One thing about me that’s become a useful character trait in this business is when I get mad about something, I do something about it. Rosehip hydrosol became one of those ‘do something’ stories. A couple of years ago, I decided to search for rosehip hydrosol to add to our ever growing hydrosol selection. At the time, there was one retailer which wasn’t an option and one American producer which was so I contacted the producer and was assured I would have a gallon once it was produced. I waited patiently for a month and learned they had sold the gallon and didn’t have more until the next year. My shop wasn’t widely known then and as such, my order was neither a priority or a consideration. But thanks to their indifference, I decided it was high time to pull out the stills and start producing these magic waters myself. It took a year and the kindness of my good friend, Justine Crane to take me up to the Sierra Nevadas after a weekend of teaching classes together to forage for these beauties. I’ve since found other wild rose spots while on my weekly resin foraging trips to supplement the quantities needed to stock our shelves best I can until the next season.
Harvesting work is hard: there’s a lot of ground to cover, collection containers to pack in and out of the trek and in this case, incidental hazards such as thorns that magically reveal themselves in fingers a week later. Even after all these sweaty efforts, I maintain that producing my own hydrosols is absolutely worth it. Like all of my distillations, this one is done in small batches so the fruitiness can be present in the hydrosol in a vibrant way that I haven’t found in commercial production. It also has a small amount of rosiness to the profile which reminds the user that this is from the rose family. Rosehip hydrosol is very helpful in daily life, particularly with those hot flashing’ gals moving into the honored crone phase.
