Four years ago, I decided I would publicly dive into the agarwood pool. I had been working with different species of Agarwood for about nine years in an effort to try and really understand both the wood and the oil. There is, after all, a lot to know about an oil of antiquity and royalty. I’ve sniffed some exquisite stuff and I’ve sniffed some oud I’m sure was straight out of some dirt pile in the back of someone’s farm. One commercial sample even left blisters on my neck. It’s tricky sourcing this stuff and although I risk sounding like an alarmist, in a way, I found the learning curve of Ambergris easier. Agar requires a long distillation that makes it necessary to be cohabitated or returned to the still to be redistilled. As a producer myself, I appreciate level of patience and skill needed to produce this exotic oil.
This Agarwood is from Aceh Provence and has gorgeous rich, dark cherry notes. There are no minty or barnyard notes and there shouldn’t be either. This is a small, purely artisan, purely dark cherry distillation. It’s the kind of profile that drives oud lovers into addiction and other oud sellers to sneak in an order with us. I don’t grade our Agarwood as it is a subjective measure but I feel that by now we have established that if an aromatic is in our apothecary, it has met my high standards. Customers have shared that our selection of oud oils are not only stellar but are better than much of the agarwood oils sold by well known agarwood sellers on this platform. I take the feedback as both serious and complementary.
