I’ve chased both water lily and lotus flowers my whole life brought on by my other lifelong obsession of history of ancient Egypt. Blue Lotus was the first oil that I began my apothecary with in 2013 and it wasn’t until much later that I introduced pink and white Lotus from Thailand. A yellow Lotus production took some convincing with our producer but this year, somehow the moon was right, the stars were aligned and by September, the last of the coveted lotus line on its way here. Yellow lotus is a true water lily like our blue and pink lotus absolutes from the nymphaea family. We also carry white and pink Lotus absolutes from the nelumbo nucifera family but its important to differentiate between nelumbo and nymphaea in order to avoid confusion.
Yellow lotus mark the fourth in our collection of water lily absolutes in the nymphaea family and like family, all four have their own personalities. Blue is heavy honey juiciness, pink is watery floral with pandanus notes, white holds a prominent chocolate profile and yellow is the straight arrow of the group with its sweet yet austere aroma. The absolute reminds me of the tobacco blossoms I collect all summer every year: a sweet top note that quickly evolves into a narcotic spiciness with a hint of tobacco absolute. It’s uniquely stunning, rare and one worth having in the lotus collection.
