Essential Oil Apothecary

Sandalwood Hawaiian

Unlike our other two sandalwood offerings, I wasn’t in love with Hawaiian sandalwood. I was so used to thick buttery sandalwood oil that I probably didn’t give it a fair shake. Luckily, I’m a fan of aging oils because whatever green wood notes I was initially picking up in the distillation started to fade out around the third year. It is a thinner oil but it is very nice, rather like the Australian spicatum – nice woody notes and a touch of sharpness. It certainly has its place in both skin care, meditation and natural perfumery but it is important that a distinction be made between an album and a paniculatum species. Hawaiian sandalwood is unique because it is one of six sandalwood species that exist nowhere else in the world making it an important inclusion in our apothecary. Thankfully, large grove still exist on the Big Island where our distillation comes from. We offer Hawaiian Sandalwood Hydrosol, also from the same area.

Suggested uses: Blends well with rose, tuberose, lavender, violet leaf and bergamot. Sandalwood is an excellent fixative in woody, oriental, chypres, fougeres and any delicate florals.
