At a beautiful rock garden in the heart of my city, I’ve been given full access to organic plants and trees because of my love and respect for it. This summer, Melissa showed her full self, arriving both fragrant and abundant. We don’t have wet springs typically but this this it was wet bringing abundant wood violets and later some of the best lemon balm I’ve seen growing in our hot climate. It takes a whole lot of lemon balm to fill a still so I supplemented batches with the lemon balm I grow in my backyard close to the blue lotus pond. This hydrosol has much sweeter lemon notes than commercially produced hydrosols in part due to the loving care of the plant but also a well developed technique I’ve worked hard to expand over the last couple of years.
With its delicate heart shaped leaf and affinity for the heart, Melissa is derived from the Greek word, “Bee”. We thought our Greek honey scented Melissa hydrosol was an appropriate offering in honor of Melissa’s roots. Melissa was part of a famous 14th century water that we are not allowed to mention here. The formula was closely guarded so it is unclear all of the ingredients that were used but Melissa was surely part of it.
Melissa Hydrosol is lemony without being citrus, providing a sweeter lemon scent rather than sharp citrus notes. Its gentle scent is refreshing and calming. The hydrosol is gentle enough to use on all skin types and while we are not allowed to share all the benefits here, we encourage further reading about this beautiful hydrosol.
