Grand fir notes is a scent profile to love. It’s also an excuse I gladly use to visit a dear friend in the Pacific Northwest when I need to collect more Grand Fir for the next distillation. I could collect it here in California but honestly, it is so much more divinely scented and lively in cooler climates like Oregon, Washington and West Coast Canada. I travel with my still (it goes with my checked in baggage when I fly) so this fir is distilled onsite to obtain highest potency. I harvest sustainably and make sure I’m in the woods to reduce human contamination such as polution and chemicals. The scent is green, fresh as one would expect with a conifer and slightly herbaceous. It is what can be smelled when walking in a heavily treed forest after the rain. I’m also a huge fan of splashing a little of our Grand Fir hydrosol in San Pelligrino sparkling mineral water. Absolutely delicious with a squeeze of lemon. I steam distill Grand fir in small batches for about three hours on high heat and then lower heat after the first hour to draw out the distillation and obtain beautiful notes. I only use distilled water in the bottom of the still so that I can use the waste water from the still later in a bath for an immune supportive bath and also as a personal ritual to the tree that has provided me the rare opportunity to do my heart’s work. No string attached.
