Our Canadian Douglas Fir comes direct from our Canadian distiller and is every inch the Christmas tree scent one can expect from the tree. The tree is a ubiquitous conifer of the Pacific Northwest and herbalists have a long history of resin, needle and bark use thanks to the first true herbalists, Native North Americans. Back home on Vancouver Island, we would call it the Pineapple tree and even before I was out collecting Pine goodies in early spring, I was collecting Douglas Fir resin and young needles for my ritual spring cleanse and healing balm needs. This summer (2024) I distilled both the needles and separately, the fir cones that glistened with resin to produce our hydrosol.
The essential oil is described as pine scented but I detect more of a pineapple note. The essential oil supports respiratory health and when air quality is stagnant, is outstanding in an essential oil humidifier. There’s nothing like a fir scented room. I add Douglas Fir essential oil to hand creams and healing balms I produce for antiseptic and anti fungal qualities. Fir is a very nice addition to woody, masculine blends and makes a great cologne for all seasons.
