When I bought the nautilus looking Ambrette seeds, I had the notion to distill them myself because the CO2 I sold for years obsessed me so. The scent is sweet and musky and dry down is persistent, all the accoutrements I treasure in a musk scent. I wanted a hydrosol to match the essential oil as I often do in an almost 90s monochromatic throwback. It is understandable why Musk Ambrette Hydrosol isn’t readily available. It’s a devil to produce with dermatitis and itching from cropping seed hairs to the low yield of 0.2% to 0.6%. The oil is distilled as a solid wax called a butter or Ambrette beurre and treated with Alkali treatment to yield a yellow oil. The hydrosol is likely the last thing on a distiller’s mind. Schimmel and Co. were the first to offer Ambrette absolute in 1902, claiming it was six times more powerful than the butter. Such are the luxuries of being first.
Musk Ambrette hydrosol is from our small producer in India, folks that have become like cherished family. Their sense of honor with their distillations comes through with many of our newly acquired treasures from them. Once again, they have processed this beautiful aromatic with the treatment befitting its preciousness. The scent is sweet and musky and smells like Ambrette oil … thankfully and just as I hoped.
