Some of the more moving aromas to me are ones I find in the least likely of places. I’m not a gin drinker but I love the aroma of gin. Bombay Sapphire and London Dry entice me but Tanqueray is perfume in a bottle to my nose. What I couldn’t reconcile is that gin is produced using juniper berries and other aromatics but I never felt juniper berry essential oil captured those fresh notes. I’ve come close with the juniper berry and branch distillation I do in the winter months but nothing captured those beautiful notes until I imported Juniper excelsa. This oil is sometimes called greek juniper but grows in other countries such as Bulgaria, Lebanon, Turkey and others in the eastern Mediterranean.Â
Although excelsa is not a rare species of juniper, the essential oil appears to be rather elusive which embodies my entire goal with our apothecary; to have those special, sometimes rare, sometimes one of a kind oils for our perfume community.Â
