When I think back to the aroma I was first aware of as a child, before the rugosa roses, buffalo bean flowers and poplar buds in early spring, it was the marigold that imprinted itself onto to my catalogue of scent memories. The flowers are tenacious, much like the aroma, defying the dry prairie soil only to define itself into remarkable artemisia notes within their richly colored velvet petals. The profile is lockstep with green apples, peach artemisia and green cognac. It is the bloom of immortality and the spice of Europe’s Georgia. The flower is as historic as Shakespeare’s gardens and India’s attars, Genda being one of those attars. In perfumery, woody notes such as sandalwood blend well with the top note floral as does chrysanthemum and oakmoss. I expect myrrh to be another interesting oil to blend with french marigold in a composition as well. It’s rare that a flower does not lose some part of its aromatic compounds when steam distilled but French marigold oil is surprisingly near identical to the fresh flower which is also that close to my memory of it on the dry prairies so long ago.
