Once I had about a hundred distillations under my belt this year, I felt brave enough to tackle the really delicate and reclusive florals. Pink Lotus was the first tricky scent I was successfully able to capture. Lily flowers have the same powdery note that can be a slippery slope to capture but when I work with a well iced condenser and well regulated low heat, I’m able to catch that dragon.
It took a few distillations of both pink and yellow lilies before I realized I had a gemini (or is it tri-mini) on my hands. The yellow lilies, in 100 degree heat smell like fruity bananas yet in weather ten degrees less, they smell like acacia or caragana flowers. Pink lilies are what I think pink smells like: powdery, sweet and sophisticated. I like that the flower is all over the place scent wise through the season as well. They are beautiful and showy in the spring but just building their scent profile in the spring. By summer, they are in their own write – sophisticated flowery, powder notes that come through the hydrosol beautifully. It’s this work that really brought me to feel like I was a good distiller which isn’t easy. I’ve learned a lot this year and distilled as much as I could get my hands on. My hope is that this gemini hydrosol will be enjoyed and loved as much as I’ve loved distilling it. And that I’ve produced enough to make it to next summer.
Suggested use: mist on skin as an antiaging skin toner that softens lines. Can be misted onto hair to freshen and delicately perfume.
