Mastic Essential Oil

Like our Mastic hydrosol, I’m glad I waited for resin distilled Mastic essential oil instead of opting for leaf and branch distilled Mastic. The scent is so close to the wild fresh resin, that I find little difference between the oil and the fresh semi soft resin our producer sent along for my chewing pleasure. It is a true balsam that adds a minerality or sea note to perfume bases and pairs particularly well with Lavender essential oil or Mimosa absolute. I detect a pistachio note too and rightly so as Mastic is a scrub of the pistachio genus. Mastic has been a darling of the supplement industry for digestive support and dental care. It is a well known lymphatic as well as bronchial decongestant and natural skin adhesive for open wounds. Hippocrates wrote about the many healing benefits of the healing tears of Chios as did Dioscorides, the first century Greek physician. While it has been used since antiquity on the other side of the world, here in the new world, we have been a little slow to embrace this beautiful and rare essential oil. Feels like a natural addition to our apothecary.

Suggested uses: Mastic essential oil can be used in floral bases as a fixative. A must for masculine note compositions. Can be used in skin care as well as diffused to add a fresh balsamic note to the room. Add a few drops to toothpaste or mouthwash for oral hygiene support.
